FREAK

Filed under: Internet, Personal, Tech Stuff — kw198025 @ 12:39 am

The title of this post is directed at who ever is responsible for emailing the owner of a website I did not know existed and threatening to infringe the copyright of their work, not much of a big deal huh, well no not really but it is when who ever sent that email to the site owner did so supposedly from one of my email addresses leaving me to have to explain to the site owner that I had no intention of ripping his site content and passing it off as my own.

OK no real harm done, but that is not the point, mind thinking about it I guess some small minded people have nothing better to do with their time.

Now, moving on……Why do they call a pocket pc a “pocket” pc, because looking at it, though granted they are small but they are not exactly pocket sized, well most of them arent anyway. I have had that question gnawing away all day, probably because I spent most of the afternoon fiddling about with my own ppc, which is somewhat different from what I was going to do – spend some time messing about on the ibook.

Also I am getting so fed up with the woman that own’s the local newsagents, however I don’t have much choice but go in there, as the other local shop is a filling station and one their prices are well over the top, and two they only sell the local newspaper, and I read two of the nationals, so I have to go into the old cow’s shop and get my national press, anyhow the reason I hate her guts more and more each time I see her: Well not for the same reason as most people round here, it is more to do with the fact that I have a health problem, and she finds it exremely amusing to laugh about it with her staff, I started to think it a little strange a few weeks ago when the laughter started every time I walked in the shop, but thought nothing of it, then after a while I started to cotton on, and finally overheard a conversation between a couple of the staff about me while I was in the shop, and now I must admit my opinion of them lowers every time I see them, I also dont spend as much money there as I used to, meaning I get ALL my “newsagent” stuff thrown in with my grocery shopping online which in turn means I have gone from spending about £30.00 a week in the newsagent to around £4.00 ok only a loss of around £27.00 but for a small retailer I hope that is enough to knock the profit margin, even if it is by something as small as one or two percent.

Where’s My TV Show?

If the scheduling people on channel 5 happen to find this post at any time what have you done with my program??

I’m talking about the Gadget Show, not my own show of course. It used to be repeated on a Saturday morning, but today no gadget show :( checked the listings magazine and it’s not even been moved to tomorrow morning, which is what I thought they had done.

So why don’t I just watch the original broadcast at 7:15 on a Monday night, well that is because my ex ALWAYS phones to talk to the kids and I can either never hear the damned show because my eldest is sat yacking on to her mother, or I have my ex on the phone yacking on to me, I think now I have read this post back to myself I am going to tell my ex to call on a Tuesday :D

Hurrah for free stuff

Filed under: Personal, Tech Stuff — kw198025 @ 2:42 pm

A short while ago I subscribed to 3 IT magazines, all of which are on a “trial” service, where I pay something like £1.00 for 2 or 3 issues delivered to my door each month, and providing I cancel it before the so called trial period is up all I pay is the tiny sum already taken, something I will make sure of should I decide to cancel them as I will delete the direct debit on my bank account, with the subscription however comes a free gift from each magazine, something I didn’t know about when I signed up so imagine my surprise when a toolkit arrives at my house yesterday afternoon, totally free of charge and mine to keep even if I cancel the subscription! But that is not all, again this morning I get another 2 packages one of which is a tech book and the other a PC toolkit, both coincidentally I wanted to get anyway, I just had not got around to actually going and buying them.

Again both of these gifts are mine to keep even if I cancel the subscription, and the best bit is I haven’t been charged anything for the trial part of the subscription yet, so effectively I could now go to my internet banking, cancel the direct debits and keep the stuff and we are not talking cheap stuff here either, the book is worth £24.95, the std. toolkit would cost about £10.00 from a DIY store and the PC toolkit varies in price depending on where you go but is marked up anything from £15.00 – £26.99 so looking at it I have got near on £50.00 worth of gear for subscribing to three magazines, all of which will arrive at my door and be charged at less than the cover price.

My thoughts on this: Much welcomed gifts, useful gifts, BARGAINS, but note to magazine publishers: perhaps someone should re-think the way these things are sent out because I am sure there are people out there that would rip them off by signing up for the mags, getting the free stuff and then cancelling before they pay anything.

Mobile Operators

Filed under: Career, Personal, Work — kw198025 @ 12:41 pm

I forgot to come back yesterday and update on the career benefits on offer from the UK Mobile operators, well after checking them all out in detail here it is:

They all offer pretty much the same stuff, the only difference being Orange who throw a “party” for the staff every so often.

Yeah Great that is really going to convince me to send a CV to them over anyone else, when I look at jobs I don’t want a staff party as part of my benefit package, I want things like health insurance, paid holiday time, the option for flexible working hours and pension plans (amongst other things). To sum it up, my CV will be going off to T-Mobile as nothing about any of the other networks managed to sway me to apply to them, they all give you a free mobile phone apart from vodafone who only give you a discount option, which I think is pretty poor for a company of their size, they all pay a fairly reasonable salary, they all have vacancies in my selected field and they all offer exactly the same amount of annual paid holiday.

So here goes me to upload my CV to T-Mobile Careers, wish me luck :D

Lunchtime Thoughts

Filed under: Career, Personal, Work — kw198025 @ 3:13 pm

Lunchtime today I decided I would check out the jobs at T-Mobile and after a few minutes on their careers website I found 3 jobs that allow you to work from home, guess where a copy of my CV went, they offer some pretty good employee benefits too, though I haven’t yet checked out the other networks to see what they offer, come to think of it I had not even thought of working for a mobile operator until I saw something about T-Mobile in the career section of the times yesterday.

I’m going to go check ‘em out, I’ll let you know later what I find :D

Flickr on a go-slow?

Filed under: Personal, Tech Stuff — kw198025 @ 9:40 pm

Is it just me, my laptop, my DSL or something else or is Flickr on a hell of a go-slow lately??

This is 2 nights running I have been on there and found it to be about as fast as a snail with lead boots on.

I wouldn’t mind so much but I actually find myself enjoying looking at everyones photos on there, I can spend hours browsing through them all, I had a weekend here on my own a short while ago, and don’t laugh but I actually spent most of the Sunday just browsing Flickr, what I mean by that is I literally did nothing else all day apart from get up to get drinks and other essential supplies lol, but seriously I was on there all damned day I must be addicted, maybe I should go the local FA meeting.

I found this http://www.car-parazzi.com/  c/o Robert Scoble http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/ There is some pretty cool and imaginative stuff over there, just a shame I didn’t know about this kind of thing when I was 17 as my interest in cars is not as great now as it was then!

Short and to the point

Todays post is going to be exactly as it’s title suggests because I am sat here writing this when I should really be sleeping.

Got a new phone today (mobile) its cool, but it isn’t a Nokia, so I am not quite used to how it all functions yet and which button does what.

Have decided that I am going to make more of an effort to talk to God, and not just when I want to pray for personal reasons.

Am going to try and pack in cigarette smoking, though I do not think I am going to get very far with this one, however if I don’t manage to give them up I should at least be able to cut them down, though I don’t smoke as many now as I used to because I tend to hand roll them apart from the first one or two of the day or like right now when will have a “ready made”

OK That is that for today.

Til tomorrow, or the next day, or maybe even the one after that….KW

A bloody good whinge

I have been a miserable git all day, moaning and whinging so why not finish the day off with a good moan.

I think I have just been in one of “those” moods, but anyway, here is what has really ratted me off:

BT – Home Phone service

and

Virgin Mobile – Mobile Phone

Why BT has ratted me off:

I call them, spend an hour in a que, only to end up speaking to some woman in bombay (i am not racist by the way) who finally ends up telling me the information that I phoned to tell her, that looks complicated already doesnt it.

What basically happened was my home phone service got switched to another provider WITHOUT my say so, therefore I needed to contact BT to get them to get it back again, hence the need for this call, anyways I get through to India tell them the problem and after 30 minutes trying to explain the above the woman I am speaking to finally says, and I quote “Oh it appears your service has been changed to another provider” HOO BLOOMIN RAY you finally understand why I have called you, so there is me thinking now we are getting somewhere when she decides to transfer me to another department in Ireland thank goodness, anyway after an hour and a half of being transferred from one department to another I eventually get my phone serice back to normal, and by the time I am done I REALLY need a cup of tea and a cig.

And as for virgin mobile:

Well, this one is not so complicated, just a pain in the ass. My mobile got suspended, I call them to ask why and get told it is because my direct debit had been cancelled, yes I reply, I have a new bank account and I updated the details on your website. I then get told they don’t have the details so I give them the new bank details again, make the payment with my debit card and then get told it will be 72 hours before they can take the bar off my phone!! So I have a moan at the girl on the end of the phone before ending the call wanting another cuppa and a cig especially as due to the stupidness of Virgin mobile the cup of tea I had already made was, by now, stone cold.

My final thought for the day……ROLL ON BED TIME

p.s no further info re: the man bag

Until next time….KW
